‘Smell the flowers along the way’

In this fast pace world we live in the saying ‘smell the flowers along the way’ comes to mind so prominently.

Let me tell you why. Three years ago my husband made a bird box and put a camera inside linked to our TV in the hope that it would be used by the blue tits to bring their little ones into the world and we could witness the whole thing. Nothing happened until last month when all hell broke lose!

A mother blue tit spent the months of March and April bringing in moss and feathers laying her nest ready to give birth but we could not understand why she then took everything out and the box remained empty! We thought there maybe an imposter but weren’t sure, then one day we witnessed the most horrendous sight. Without putting too finer point on this part of the story, it ended up with my husband having to remove a carcass after which point the ‘winner’ started to lay her nest without any interruptions. Apparently blue tits are notorious for being territorial.

The nest is now laid and mother blue tit is sitting on her six eggs (each one the size of a pea!) while father blue tit feeds her food through the entrance of the box! It has been such a wonderful opportunity to watch. In fact we have spent many an evening watching her rather than the actual television! It is mesmerising and something I would heartily recommend. It not only puts life into perspective but is such an enjoyable and fascinating experience.

We all live such busy lives and I am fortunate that my office overlooks a beautiful garden with so much wild life. It is not only enjoyable but extremely therapeutic too. I think this is proven in our results! Smelling the flowers along the way can give you a boost to work that much harder! Try it.
